The flat iron was plugged in and heating up. The glowing screen showed climbing temperatures. In the moment it took to turn my head from right to left, the display on the implement was suddenly blank. Even though it had started to warm up, the flat iron was now completely powerless.

I tried unplugging and replugging, moving from room to room testing different electrical outlets. The result was the same – the flat iron had no power.

I thought about how we may have a similar experience in our own lives.

We say our prayers and work through our devotional routine with familiarity. We pray, expecting things to happen as they usually do. Our outward display assures us that we’re operating normally.

But in the blink of an eye, things can change. Anything can happen to disturb our normal and cause our internal power to go out. We flit about here and there, hoping that some external attempt will help our internal connection. But, there is no change.

Our power comes from God, through His Holy Spirit. Without His Spirit in us, our power is limited.

It is possible to go through the motions of life and function seemingly well. But a mundane life is not an accurate reflection of a magnificent God. God wants us to rely on His power in our lives. His Word says “It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit.”

If we lived in isolation, a life of limited power would be just fine. When individuals who have little power come together, it’s a nice-looking group.

However, when Spirit-filled individuals come together, it is a group empowered by God, ready and willing to serve Him wholeheartedly! They share the desire to work together to meet the needs of their community and impact hearts with the Gospel message.

How can we maintain this power-filled connection with God?

…We’ll explore this more in an upcoming post…
